I am very excited to reveal more photos from the cover shoot for summer’s Modern Cat magazine! Part of the contract with the magazine stated that I could not use the photos until the issue was off newstands. The newest Modern Cat magazine recently appeared in my mailbox, so it’s time to share!
How this cat photo shoot came about:
Modern Cat contacted me in February to see if I’d be available and interested in photographing a San Diego cat who won their Star Cat contest. After negotiating for this editorial pet photography job, and of course after seeing this particularly adorable cat’s photo, I said yes! One of my 2015 goals was photographing more cats, so what a way to start the year as a San Diego cat photographer!
About Marmalade and why he was chosen as a Star Cat for the cover:
You can read the article online here, but in short, Marmalade was adopted as a kitten in Florida as a playmate for his sweet black cat big brother Cole. He originally tested negative for FIV, but after the family moved to Southern California, a vet found a tumor on Marm’s intestine and found him to be FIV positive. He had surgery and chemo and is now in remission. Yay for kicking cancer’s butt, Marmalade! Marmalade, Cole, and their humans are big advocates for FIV awareness, feline cancer awareness, black cat advocacy, adopting and rescue, and more great causes. You can view their entertaining and educational videos on Youtube, and also follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to learn more.
Fun times with San Diego cats Marmalade and Cole and their humans:
I met Chris, Jess, Marmalade, and Cole a day or two before their photo session at their home in Oceanside, for a consultation meeting to get to know everyone and see their house where I’d be photographing these fun cats. Marmalade and Cole are very comfortable being photographed and appearing on video, because of their dad’s daily social media posts on their accounts, so I was not worried about shyness or being scared of the camera!
The photo shoot went pretty well, and I think fun was had by everyone involved! I had purchased some colorful items to style the photos with more color, a big request from the magazine, while keeping Marmalade’s handsome orange color in mind.
His parents’ (and my) favorite expression of Marmalade is his wide-eyed, slightly open mouth look, which is very different from what was chosen for the cover (both are equally cute looks, of course).
Here is a behind the scene’s video of our shoot from Cole and Marmalade’s Youtube channel.
As requested by Modern Cat, we focused 95% of the photos on Marmalade, with a few photos of Chris and Marm. We snuck Cole into a few shots so he didn’t feel left out!
During the photo session I heard many fun stories about Marmalade and Cole, like how Marmalade really likes the bathroom, especially when people are in there, and this cupboard in particular!
A fun tip for getting a cat tongue out photo is to feed them a bit of coconut oil…they love it! Tuna was also used to keep the cats from wandering too far away from the light as we were shooting, as well as many different cat toys (their favorites being a piece of string, a paper towel roll… super fancy toys are not needed!). Thanks to Chris for knowing and sharing what works to keep these two cats entertained! 🙂
Marmalade also LOVES sleeping in this Union Jack purse that used to belong to his mom, but is now covered in enough fur to officially be “his”. He was definitely tired enough at the end of the shoot to curl up and take a nap. He earned that nap!
A few months after the magazine was published, I met up with Cole and Marmalade’s humans at CatConLA, which was super fun! It was awesome to meet the fabulous people of Modern Cat there, as well as seeing the “As Seen in Modern Cat” signs with Marmalade’s cover photo on it all around the convention.
Cole and Marmalade have a new calendar available to purchase here. Check it out and enjoy looking at these cute cats every day!
Thank you Cole, Marmalade, Chris, Jess, and the lovely people of Modern Cat for this great experience!
